COURSE DESCRIPTION
During this five-day training course, you will acquire the knowledge and skills to plan and carry out internal and external audits of an Environmental Management System (EMS) in compliance with ISO 14001:2015, the audit guidelines of ISO 19011 and the certification process described in ISO/IEC 17021-1.
Based on practical exercises, you will master audit techniques and become competent to manage an audit program, lead an audit team, communicate effectively with auditees and resolve conflicts. After acquiring the necessary expertise, you may sit for the exam and apply for the “PECB Certified ISO 14001 Lead Auditor” credential, demonstrating your capabilities to audit organizations based on best practices in environmental management.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Acquire the expertise to perform an ISO 14001 internal audit following ISO 19011 guidelines;
- Acquire the expertise to perform an ISO 14001 certification audit following ISO 19011 guidelines and the specifications of ISO/IEC 17021-1;
- Acquire the necessary expertise to manage an EMS audit team;
- Understand the operation of an ISO 14001-conformant Environmental Management System;
- Understand the relationship between an EMS and risk management, controls and compliance with the requirements of different stakeholders;
- Improve the ability to analyze the internal and external environment of an organization, its environmental risk assessment and audit decision-making.
PREREQUISITES
PECB Certified ISO 14001 Foundation Certification or basic knowledge of ISO 14001 is recommended, ideally combined with 2 years of HSE or audit experience.

Day 1: Introduction to the Environmental Management System (EMS) and ISO 14001

- Section 5: Environmental Management System (EMS) — ISO 14001:2015 requirements.
Day 2: Audit principles, preparation, and initiation of an audit
- Section 6: Fundamental audit concepts and principles;
- Section 7: The impact of trends and technology in auditing;
- Section 8: Evidence-based auditing;
- Section 9: Risk-based auditing;
- Section 10: Initiation of the audit process;
- Section 11: Stage 1 audit — documentation review and readiness assessment.
Day 3: On-site audit activities
- Section 12: Preparing for stage 2 audit;
- Section 13: Stage 2 audit — on-site auditing;
- Section 14: Communication during the audit;
- Section 15: Audit procedures and evidence-gathering techniques;
- Section 16: Creating audit test plans;
- Section 17: Auditing environmental aspects and compliance obligations.
- Section 18: Drafting audit findings and nonconformity reports;
- Section 19: Audit documentation and quality review;
- Section 20: Closing of the audit and closing meeting;
- Section 21: Evaluation of action plans by the auditor;
- Section 22: Beyond the initial audit — surveillance and recertification;
- Section 23: Managing an internal audit program.
A three-hour exam in essay and scenario format based on real EMS audit cases.
