COURSE DESCRIPTION
This five-day intensive course allows participants to gain the necessary expertise for organizing and implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS) based on ISO 14001:2015. Participants will acquire a comprehensive understanding of best practices used to manage environmental aspects, compliance obligations, risks and opportunities, and the lifecycle of products and services.
The training aligns with project management practices outlined in ISO 10006 (Quality Management — Guidelines for Quality Management in Projects) and is fully compatible with ISO 14004 (general guidelines on implementation) and ISO 14005 (phased implementation). After completing this course, you may sit for the exam and apply for the “PECB Certified ISO 14001 Lead Implementer” credential, recognized in 150+ countries and confirming your ability to lead EMS implementation projects.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Understand the implementation of an Environmental Management System in accordance with ISO 14001:2015;
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of the concepts, approaches, standards, methods and techniques required for the effective management of an EMS;
- Understand the relationship between the components of an EMS, including risk management, controls and compliance with the requirements of different stakeholders;
- Acquire the necessary expertise to support an organization in implementing, managing and maintaining an EMS as specified in ISO 14001;
- Acquire the necessary expertise to manage a team implementing ISO 14001;
- Develop the knowledge and skills required to advise organizations on best practices in environmental management;
- Improve the capacity for analysis and decision-making in the context of environmental performance and sustainability.
PREREQUISITES
ISO 14001 Foundation Certification or a basic knowledge of ISO 14001 plus at least 2 years of professional experience in environmental, HSE or management systems is recommended.

Day 1: Introduction to ISO 14001 and initiation of an EMS

- Section 2: Standards and regulatory frameworks in environmental management;
- Section 3: Environmental Management System (EMS): structure and principles;
- Section 4: Fundamental concepts — aspects, impacts and lifecycle perspective;
- Section 5: Initiation of the EMS implementation;
- Section 6: Understanding the organization and its context.
Day 2: Planning the implementation of an EMS
- Section 7: Leadership, environmental policy and management commitment;
- Section 8: Organizational structure and EMS roles;
- Section 9: Identification and evaluation of environmental aspects and impacts;
- Section 10: Compliance obligations — legal and other requirements;
- Section 11: Environmental risks and opportunities;
- Section 12: Environmental objectives, indicators and improvement programs.
Day 3: Implementation of an EMS
- Section 13: Documented information management;
- Section 14: Resources, competence and awareness;
- Section 15: Internal and external communication;
- Section 16: Operational planning and control of environmental aspects;
- Section 17: Emergency preparedness and response;
- Section 18: Lifecycle management of products and services;
- Section 19: Managing suppliers and contractors from an environmental perspective.
Day 4: EMS monitoring, continual improvement, and preparation for the certification audit
- Section 20: Monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation of environmental performance;
- Section 21: Internal audit of the EMS;
- Section 22: Management review;
- Section 23: Treatment of nonconformities and corrective actions;
- Section 24: Continual improvement of the EMS;
- Section 25: Preparing for the certification audit;
- Section 26: Certification process and closing of the training course.
A three-hour exam in essay and scenario format based on real EMS implementation cases.
